Abuja — "There are philanthropists and there are philanthropists. In the case of Bulus Makama, he is not just a philanthropist, but one with a difference. His humanitarian gestures for the less privileged are multifaceted, and he touches many lives throughout the season in his own humble, unassuming a quiet way".
With these words Douglas Eniola Jacob, a manager of Bounty Food for Hunger Relief Initiative, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in FCT, explains the reason behind the decision to confer an award of excellence on Bulus Makama, founder and executive director of Bounty Food for Hunger Relief Initiative. (NGO) and other eminent Nigerians. Called Destiny Youths Merit Award for Excellence, the ceremony is scheduled to hold in December 2009 in Abuja. According to Jacob, "It is our own way of acknowledging the life-changing impacts which those individuals, corporate organisations and groups have made in the society over the past years". Speaking in an interview with leadership Eniola said: "
As said earlier, Makama has, over the years, touched numerous lives positively in different ways through philanthropic gestures. One thing that is particularly inspiring about his efforts is that he started helping the needy as far back as the mid 2006 when his company was still relatively young. He added: "Just as it is said in our National Anthem that 'The Labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain,' we at Bounty Food for Hunger Relief Initiative feel obliged to honour the labour of our 'heroes present,' and when you talk of such persons, such heroes, Bulus Makama, is right there on top of the list on account of his chequered and well documented contributions to the progress of his community and society in general and youths, widows in particular." When contacted on the forthcoming award to be bestowed on him, Makama, said the whole thing was a pleasant surprise to him.
"I must confess that it all came to me as a pleasant surprise. You see, I never, I never knew that my humble efforts in terms of assisting the less privileged were being noted to the extent of earning a prestigious award". Makama added: "I am particularly touched by the fact that the award is coming from a group of youths, as well as an NGO with special focus on youth's related issues. It all goes to show that whatever we do we must do well as there are some persons out there taking note. I will redouble my efforts in assisting the less privileged in my own humble way.
