Nigeria: Akwa Ibom Govt Approves N26 Billion For Housing Estate

Uyo — In its bid to solve the perenial housing problem of the people, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has approved the sum of N26,950,000,000 for the construction of about 2000 unit of houses in the state.

Disclosing this shortly after the State Executive Council meeting in Uyo, the Commissioner for Information and Social Re-orientation Mr. Aniekan Umana, said under phase one of the project, 1100 detached bungalows of 500 units is to be located in Uyo the state capital, while 300 would be sited in Ikot Ekpene and 300 in Eket. The State Executive Council meeting presided over by the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio according to Umanah took the step to tackle the envisaged housing problem that may arise as a result of the various activities of government meant to expand the economy of the state.

"The decision to build the houses across the state was informed by the need to tackle the housing challenges of the people, especially in view of the growing developmental activities ,which have resulted in more people migrating to Uyo the State capital," he said. "The housing project which will be executed in phases under a direct labour approach will also serve as a means of empowering the people. "Accordingly, phase one of the project is scheduled for commissioning on May 29, 2010 while phase two will be ready by December of the same year".

He said the council also considered a school fee regime proposed for Akwa Ibom State University, and "approved the sum of N30, 000, 00 per student as tuition fee for each academic session with effect from November 2009. An additional N20, 000.00 to be paid by non indigenes per session as development fees was also approved. The intention of government in setting low tuition fee at the institution according to him was to ensure that Akwa Ibom children have access to University education at the lowest possible cost."
