Nigeria: NURTW Boss Decries Sale of Alcohol At Motor-Parks

8 November 2009

Enugu State Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mr. Godwin Ede, has called for a ban on the sale of alcoholic drinks in motor-parks to curb drunkenness among drivers.

Speaking during an 'ember' months campaign, organised by the FRSC in Enugu on Monday, Ede said the issuance of liquor licences to restaurants near motor-parks was contrary to efforts by FRSC to reduce road accidents.

Ede warned that unless the practice of issuing driver's licences to under-age persons and those learning how to drive was stopped, the rate of accidents would not reduce.

"Government should go back to the old practice of providing testing grounds for learners using vehicle Inspection Officers to ensure that driving licences are not issued to people that are not fit to drive vehicles," he said.

Ede urged FRSC not only check the use of seat-belts and over loading, but to check other habits by drivers which could cause accidents, especially the violation of traffic rules.

The chairman expressed his willingness to collaborate with FRSC in the area of human capital development, using experience acquired from over 40 years as a member of NURTW.
