Kenya: Holy See Okays Institution of Canon Law Offices

7 November 2009

Nairobi — The National Head of the Canon Law Office, Fr. Dominic Kimengich says that plans are underway to establish Canon Law offices at the Church's metropolitan levels in Kenya.

Fr Kimengich told CISA that this follows a permission granted to the Kenya Episcopal Conference (KEC) by the Holy See.

He said the Church had earlier on applied for permission and His Eminence Cardinal John Njue had already received the letter granting the acquiescence in his capacity as Chairman of the KEC.

According to Fr. Kimengich, the proposed Canon law offices will be set up at the Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Nyeri Metropolitans in the course of 2010.

He said there has been a need for such offices for some time and it is pleasing that the Holy See has granted the consent.

Fr. Kimengich was speaking during a training held from November 2 - 6 in Nairobi for participants drawn from the four archdioceses Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nyeri.

"These are the canon lawyers, who will run the proposed can law offices at the metropolitan levels", explained Fr. Kimengich.

"The Cardinal also addressed the participants, where he thanked the Holy See for authorizing the creation of the Canon Law offices.

"The move will go along way to strengthen the Church on matters pertaining to marriage tribunals, and other contentious administrative issues," said Fr. Kimengich.

The training was attended by 35 Canon Lawyers.
