Police reinforcement from Agona Swedru had to be dispatched last weekend to Agona Asafo, in the Central Region to quell violence, which erupted after the election of Agona East Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to media reports, "the violence started when supporters of Alhaji Gyabiru Ibrahim, who lost the election to Mr. Jonathan Kwame Abban, Managing Director of Pioneer Distillery Company Limited, started attacking people on sight at the AME Zion Church premises."
According to the reports, "before the elections, supporters of Alhaji Gyaburi chanted war songs and carried placards, some of which read: 'No Alhaji no vote', 'Gyabiru would never step down', 'If Alhaji loses blood would flow' and 'Executives of the constituency do not speak the truth'.
Mr. Allottey Jacobs, NDC Regional Propaganda Secretary, himself a veteran of the NDC trenches condemned the action and said "the perpetuators had refused to learn and understand the democratic process of the party...it was unfortunate for some party members to take the law into their hands."
But is that all? The perpetrators, from the reports have been clearly identified and their actions were pre-meditated, considering the inscriptions on their placards. So what are we waiting for? They should be arraigned before court to face election violence charges and be told in clear unambiguous words that there is no place for electoral violence in Ghana. An example MUST be set here unless of course...
