Tanzania: Meru NGO Celebrates Decade Of Development

8 November 2009

Arusha — A Maji Ya Chai-based non-governmental organisation is celebrating 10 years of empowering community groups across Meru District.

Tanzania Environmental Development and Animal Power Society (TAN-EDAPS), has gone from strength to strength under the leadership of founder Kaanaeli Moses Mafie since its formation on 22 November 1999.

Over the last decade, Mr Mafie, a former Government Regional Planning and Control Officer and Project Coordinator for World Vision, has facilitated numerous projects aimed at formulating development policy from community level upwards.

Through TAN-EDAPS, he encourages people in the community to form and strengthen Economic Development Groups, and facilitates them to assess and prioritise their needs through SWOTS - strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats - analysis and other management tools.

According to a press statement from TAN-EDAPS, the not-for-profit organisation is active in many areas, including human resources and organisational capacity building, environmental development, food security and animal husbandry. With his assistance, groups have been able to tackle long-standing problems and implement sustainable solutions.

Mr Mafie runs TAN-EDAPS solely as its National Director, with the support of volunteers and associates. The organisation's mission statement is: "To improve the quality of life among Tanzanian Communities by promoting environmental actions and improving the ways in which animals are used as part of the development process."
