Kampala — Nathan Lwanga, the runaway driver who allegedly overturned a vehicle in which the vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya's son, Bryan died over the weekend, is now in Police custody.
Deputy Police Spokesman Henry Kalulu announced the suspect's arrest at a press conference on Monday.
"We got him this morning from his brother's home in Kibuli, a city suburb, where he was hiding and he has already recorded a statement," he said.
Mr Lwanga, 33, fled the accident scene at Bbira-Bulaga on Kampala-Mityana Road, immediately after the 5a.m. crash. Four soldiers, ostensibly colleagues of late Bryan at Kabamba Military Academy in Mubende District, were injured, three severely.
Police say the driver, complaining of pains in his ribs, has been taken for treatment at Mulago Hospital. Separately, the requiem mass for late Bryan has just started at Rubaga Cathedral before the body is taken to their ancestral home in Kakiri, Wakiso District for a vigil. Burial takes place on Tuesday, organisers say.
It is not yet clear what Mr Lwanga, a resident of Buziga, a Kampala suburb, told Police of the cause of the freak accident. Detectives, however, say the man could be charged with reckless driving and causing death as ongoing investigations unearth more details.
