Uganda: Give Wife Killers Harsher Punishment, Say Activists

Kampala — The government should take strong action against those who perpetrate domestic violence resulting in death of wives and children, a group of women activists have said.

Gathering under the Uganda Joint Christian Council, an ecumenical body that brings together the Catholic, Anglican and the Orthodox churches, the women said "such murderers do not deserve a place on this earth".

"The government has not done much to trim these criminals who act under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Imagine a man being accused of killing his wife over Shs500," Ms Frances Maria Muyinda, the chairperson of the activists, told Daily Monitor in Kampala on Saturday.

The women held a peaceful demonstration days after the media reported that a man in Kayunga District had allegedly killed his wife in a quarrel over a coin while another man in Jinja attempted to commit suicide after killing his wife.

Recent Police reports indicate that over 100 cases of domestic violence have been reported across the country.

And the women did not have kind words for motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol, saying such people have killed many school-going children.

"We are aggrieved because people are taking marijuana and other narcotics. But we are training people to identify such groups and counsel them," Ms Muyinda added.

Several other people including a 56-year-old man were recently remanded over charges of defiling their relatives.

The theme of the march was 'Fight Against Human Murder and Domestic Violence'. The women called on all citizens to act responsibly saying: "Let everybody have the duty of bringing up not only their own children."
