Nigeria: Shekarau Now Sardaunan Kano

9 November 2009

Kano — The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Dr. Ado Bayero, has conferred on the Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, the title of Sardaunan Kano with immediate effect.

A statement by the Governor's Senior Special Assistant Media and Public Relations, Mallam Yau Sule Yau, said a date would soon be announced for the turbaning ceremony to be held after the Eid- el-Kabir.

Accepting the honour done to him, Shekarau, according to the statement, thanked his highness and his council for this wonderful and historic recognition.

"It is indeed an honour not only to him but to the entire citizens of Kano State who he represents," the statement said.

The Governor pledged to "remain a good ambassador of the Kano Emirate as well as uphold the great virtues of the late Sardauna of Sokoto, whom we are all proud of.

Malam Shekarau was particularly happy that this offer has coincided with his 54th birthday."
