Kenya: Major Challenges for Schools in Flood-Hit Areas

Nairobi — The Education ministry in conjunction with that of Special Programmes have set up two centres where candidates from flood-dominated schools will sit for their exams.

Coast Provincial director of Education Tom Majani said 910 candidates in Malindi, Garsen and Magarini districts have been affected by floods and have been moved to other safer centres for their exams.

"The centres are at Malindi and Magarini where candidates will be sitting for their exams and we have already hired a helicopter which will be ferrying exams from Malindi airstrip to other regions which are still flooded," said Mr Majani.

Elsewhere in Baricho, a candidate will have to sit for his exam in a hospital after he was bitten by a snake over the weekend.

Mr Majani said special arrangements have been made to ensure the candidate sits his papers without any interference.

The PDE also warned school going children to be cautious while crossing flood prone areas. His concern comes after a standard three pupil of Marafa primary school was swept away by storm water while heading to school.

In a spot check by the Nation, most schools in Mombasa conducted their rehearsals yesterday ready for their exams starting on Monday.

And in another development, nine candidates sitting for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education will have to wait until next year before they do their national exam after they found out they had not been registered in this year's exams.

The candidates, three girls and six boys of Asa primary school in Tana Delta district, were shocked after they confirmed that their names were missing in the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) register.

Coast Provincial director of Education Tom Majani said they are holding the school's head teacher as they investigate the act.

"It is a pity that the nine candidates cannot sit for their exams after the head teacher failed to register them," said Mr Majani.

He said despite the candidates paying Sh 5,400 for the exams, the head teacher did not register them.
