After a toothless bite in the football final of the Upper Niumi District in which there was no winner, Albreda and Touba Kolon have agreed to share the booty equally between themselves after both teams made concessions.
The hotly contested final between the two villages was so significant that both finalists imported their cream of players from the Kombos in a bid to triumph in the final. But neither team was able to break the deadlock as the regular time ended in a stale mate.
The post match penalty shoot out became a moment of nervousness and anxiety among players and fans. During the shoot out, Albreda took all their five shots and scored four and Touba Kolon had their four shots and were to take their last kick to determine whether the game could be pushed to wares. But before the final kick, eagered and much anticipated fans of Albreda unknowingly stormed the field thinking that they had won.
The scenario was confusing and it took the organizing committee a couple of minutes before they were able to get the fans understand that the opponent's final shot was not taken.
The captains of the both teams were called for a decision to reschedule the game as darkness loomed over the place. Based on this condition, it was agreed that the cash prize be shared equally between the two teams and the trophy be retained till next year, since rescheduling the game would have cost them a lot of expenditure.
Modou K Bah, Chairman of the Upper Niumi District Sports Committee described the final as keenly contested, adding that both teams have exhibited sense of maturity, which therefore lead to the success of their tournament. According to him their aim of staging this tournament in their area is to promote unity and understanding among the youths of Upper Niumi as well as to promote and develop football in their district.
The football final was sponsored by Hon. Mam Cherno Omar Jallow, National Assembly Member for Upper Niumi who also graced the football final together with the Governor of North Bank Region, Edward Seckhan among other dignitaries in the area.
