The reception area at the Alliance Francaise in Gaborone on Friday became a convenient ramp for fashion models for Congolese designer, Nadia Lumbala.
The room was so congested the models had to walk through little space, while tens of people eagerly waiting to have a glimpse of Democratic Republic Cong (DRC) fashion designs, struggled to see through the stampede. Rain had forced the revellers into the reception area on what was expected to be a lovely night of rhumba, Congolese food, and Congolese fashion parade.
But the show had to go on, and Nadia had to find a way of showcasing her African designs despite the harsh conditions. On an ideal night, the fashion show would have been held outdoors, where earlier on the night a Congolese band, Zong-Zing had kept the revellers on their toes with their performance of laid back rhumba songs, before increasing the tempo later on. But the weather soon changed, resulting in unexpected down pours that forced the revellers and the band to seek cover in the reception area, where it was designated to be a serving point for drinks and Congolese food.
Despite the stampede inside the reception area, Congolese DJ, Jean-Marie, continued to dish out irresistible beats, that kept the rhumba-loving revellers wriggling all night long. The Alliance Francaise in Gaborone was staging a Congolese night for the second time after the hugely successful first one two months ago.
