Botswana: Nyangabgwe Gets New Superintendent

Kopano Olesitse

9 November 2009

Francistown — Dr Ewetse Mosweu has been appointed the new superintendent of Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital with effect from November 2. Prior to her promotion, Mosweu was a specialist in the gynaecology department of the hospital.

"The appointment of Mosweu comes after Dr Japhter Masunge, who was the hospital superintendent since 2005 got a position at University of Botswana (UB) School of Medicine. We do not expect many changes in the new leadership but just the normal continuity in the provision of health services in the hospital," said the spokesman for Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital, Caiphus Gabana.

He said he is confident that Mosweu will work and relate well with the hospital staff.

"Prior to his resignation, Masunge served a three month notice, so we were not surprised at his departure," added Gabana.

Meanwhile, Mosweu inherits a hospital faced with lack of equipment and disgruntled staff.Workers at the hospital complain about poor working conditions and low salaries. Due to overcrowding in wards, some patients sleep on the floor.

Gabana said that the hospital is grappling with increasing cases of abandoned babies. "We have one healthy baby girl who was picked up by a passerby at the bus rank. This baby was born here in the hospital but the mother whose whereabouts are unknown decided to abandon the baby," said Gabana.

He added that if they fail to locate the parents of abandoned babies, they normally put them on an adoption list.

"We try by all means to identify the mothers as the police are also involved in these cases," he said. He stated that in most cases, the majority of mothers, who abandon babies, are foreigners from neighboring countries especially Zimbabwe. "While waiting for the identification of their mothers, the babies are taken care of by the social work department in our hospital. This department ensures that the babies are fed, clothed and given love.

All Batswana are allowed to come and adopt these babies. They can even adopt children dumped by foreigners," explained Gabana.
