Nigeria: NLC Tasks Benue On Double Taxation

Makurdi — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decried what it described as the Benue State Government's deliberate deduction of excessive taxes from the salaries of workers in the state service.

Labour urged the state government to streamline its tax system to check cases of double taxation and excess deduction which has characterised tax administration in the state.

Fielding questions from newsmen in Makurdi, Chairman of the Benue State chapter of the NLC, Comrade Simon Anchaver, implored the state government to as a matter of urgency tackle the cases of illegal deductions from workers' pay package in the state to forestall rancour in the system.

Anchaver noted that such deductions were capable of creating disaffection in the system and to a large extent dampen the morale of the state's workforce if not checked.

He urged the state government to always carry workers along in policy formulation and implementation to check suspicion and bad blood in the system.

The labour leader who also urged the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led administration to remain resolute in its renewed war against corruption in the state, assured that workers were solidly behind the clampdown.

Emphasizing the importance of observing strict prudence in the management of resources accruable to the state, Anchaver lauded the government for ensuring steady payment of workers' salaries in the last two and half years of the administration.

According to the labour leader, "workers in Benue would continue to put in their best in the discharge of their responsibilities and it also behoves on government to ensure that its responsibilities to the state's workforce were not jettisoned for whatever reason in order to build on the gains of the past," he said.
