Port Harcourt — Former Minister of Transport and arrow head of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, and two other bigwigs of the party have dumped the party for Action Congress (AC).

Also fleeing the PDP are Chiefs Sergeant Awuse and Dr. Birabi.

To this end, an elaborate reception is being put together by Action Congress in Rivers State to usher Sekibo and the other former leaders of PDP to their fold.

A statement by Rivers State spokesman of AC, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, said the directive to welcome Sekibo and others was at the instance of the National Working Committee (NMC) and National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande.

"National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, resolved that certain stakeholders in Rivers State chapter of the party, like Dr Abiye Sekibo, Sergeant Awuse, Chief Birabi and others, be allowed to have a say and thereby participate effectively in party affairs," Chief Eze said.

Prince Tonye Princewill, AC leader in Rivers State, elated at the outcome of the NWC meeting, expressed his delight over the development and applauded the resolve of these great sons of the state to embrace the party.

Expressing readiness to welcome them back into the fold by setting in motion a process that would ensure a heroic reception for them, Princewill said: "I encourage these great sons of Rivers State and other indigenes to come forward and identify with the aspirations of the party."

As for their relevance in the party, Princewill explained that "Dr Birabi has always been with us and in the case of Sergeant Awuse, he is coming back home to roost. The AC is a party he laboured hard to build.

"To this end, we would accord him the necessary courtesy and in the case of Dr Sekibo, I am pleased that he has chosen, at this point in his career, to join forces with the party of the future, a party that would gladly welcome him.

"I will, however, advise Sekibo that considering his antecedents in politics, that he does the right thing by formally registering at his ward instead of his futile romance with some elements in the national leadership of the party in Abuja."
