Port Harcourt — The House of Representatives Committee on States and Local Governments has declared the Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, Mr. Mathew Olory, as the best all round chairman in the South-South zone of the country.
Also, Olory, who came tops in Cross River, was adjudged the second best chairman in Nigeria, trailing the Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Dr. Nasiru Gawanu, as the best chairman in the land.
Vanguard gathered in Port Harcourt, yesterday, that the House Committee again last Saturday night, singled out Olory with another award for excellent performances in projects and human management.
Speaking to the press, Olory, who was stunned by the awards and received kudos from former Cross River State governor, Mr. Donald Duke, said his performance was based on justifying the confidence reposed in him at the heat of the election and litigation that trailed the victory.
"The awards mean that if you put your eyes on the job and forget about what you are likely to get for yourself, serving the people with your entire mind and carrying everybody along, there would be reward for you by men and by God. That is what has happened.
"Let me now say this, that having been with me and having fought all my battles for me, God would not have been happy with me if I had messed up with the opportunity he gave me to serve the people of Akamkpa. And you know from the outset, I had said that my dream was to be the best in the country.
"I overlooked the things that would have given me pleasure as chairman to serve and execute meaningful projects for my people for which the National Assembly gave me the awards.
"Even though I was not the first, the fact that I took the second position in the country, the first in the South-South and the first in my state meant that I did not sleep on the chairmanship seat like my other colleagues across the country.
"This event underscores my belief in the fact that any chairman who cannot work for his people should not hesitate to resign."
