Ethiopia: High Profile Korean Mission On Visit Here

Addis Abeba — A high profile Korean mission led by Choi,Heung -Ryul, Head of Social Development Department of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) HQ, has arrived here in Addis Ababa to pay a week long visit till 8 November 2009.

The delegation came here with the view of further strengthening the existing bilateral cooperation between Ethiopia and Korea in the areas of water and education sectors, the Ethiopia Office of KOICA said in a statement it sent to The Daily Monitor yesterday.

Accordingly, the Mission, which includes three senior education and water experts, is here to undertake feasibility study and possibility of future engagement on the areas of water resource development in Gambella Regional State and expansion of school facilities in suburb of Addis Ababa and Tigray Regional State Administrations.

The agency said Asfaw Dingamo, Minister of Water Resource, received the Mission in his Office.

"Ethiopia and the Republic of Korea have a warm and historic relationship ever since Ethiopia sent its troops to Korea in 1950s as a UN force" the statement quoted the minister as having said while welcoming the delegation.

"As a nation we have a lot to learn from the development experience of the dynamic Korea in which they manage to secure sustainable development in all sectors including water resource development with in a shortest period of time." Choi,Heung-Ryul, Head of the Mission said Ethiopia is endowed with vast natural resource including water resource. He added KOICA will be happy to share Korea's technical know how on the water resource development sector.

KOICA said the Mission also held consultative discussion with Dilamo Otore, Head of Addis Ababa Education Bureau.

"KOICA has been providing various support to Addis Ababa education, among others by building a model elementary school in the Korean village ,dispatching volunteer teachers in different schools and colleges here in Addis Ababa," the agency cited the head as saying.

Dr. David lnYeup SONG, KOICA Chief Representative, said on the occasion KOICA has actively been engaged in Cooperation Development Programs of Water, Education and Health sectors in Ethiopia with the view of assisting the Government of Ethiopia to achieve its goals of meeting the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDG5). Dr.SONG added to this end currently KOICA has "the Project of Construction of Four Primary Schools" and "the Project for Community-Based Family Planning Capacity Building in Arsi Zone" with an outlay of over five million U Dollars.

The Mission is also expected to hold consultative discussion with Beyene Mekru, Head of Tigray Education Bureau and Omod Obang, President of the Gambella Regional State.

The Mission is scheduled to hold consultative meetings and visit of potential project sites in Gambela Regional state, Addis Abba Administration and Tigray Regional State for feasibility of Water and Education projects respectively, it was indicated.
