Zambia: Bemba Chiefs Reshuffled

10 November 2009

THE Ilamfya council of the Bemba royal establishment has reshuffled chiefs in the area to ensure efficiency.

Some chiefs have been moved from one district to another following the decision by the council, which is presided over by Paramount Chief Chitimukulu .

Senior Chief Mwamba of the Bemba speaking people confirmed in an interview yesterday that the affected chiefs shifted from their former chiefdoms at the weekend.

He said Chief Munkonge of Kasama was now Chief Tungati of Luwingu while the former Chief Tungati was Chief Mumporokoso in Mporokoso.

The former Chief Mumporokoso had now become Chief Munkonge.

Chief Mwamba said he himself could not be moved as he was a senior chief.

He said he could only move to become Senior Chief Nkula if he was to be transferred or become Paramount Chief Chitimukulu if a vacancy occured.

The traditional ruler said the transfers were first decided upon in January but could not be effected because the chiefs involved had to first harvest their crops and prepare themselves.

"They were supposed to move in August but due to transport arrangements and other logistics, they could not," he said.

He allayed speculations that the transfers could have been politically motivated following the Kasama Central parliamentary by-election.

He said the reshuffles were normal and aimed at ensuring development in the Bemba land.

"Whenever some chiefs become too familiar with subjects, the Ilamfya effects change . There is nothing political," Chief Mwamba said.

He said chiefs' positions were not affected by any political happenings saying as chiefs were above politics and therefore could not be transferred on political grounds.

Chief Mwamba said rumours that the affected chiefs had been removed from being chiefs were not true.
