THE Government has said the non-governmental organisation (NGOs) that are demanding that it discloses the names of organisations that have been pocketing donor funding are panicking.
Chief Government spokesperson, Ronnie Shikapwasha said those challenging the Government to disclose the names of the NGOs involved in cheating should not panic because the police were doing a professional job.
Lieutenant-General Shikapwasha, who is Information and Broadcasting Services minister, said he did not see reasons why Transparency International Zambia should be agitated with the revelations.
In an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Gen Shikapwasha said the Government did not believe in alarming the public and maintained that there was evidence that some NGOs were putting donor money in their personal accounts.
The minister said the NGOs should not cry foul or complain of victimisation because the law should not be selectively applied.
"If some NGOs feel that they are innocent, why worry because if they are innocent they will prove themselves as such," he said.
Early this week, the Government said some NGOs had obtained money from donors on the pretext that it was for governance and assisting the underprivileged but later transferred it into their personal accounts.
Commissioner of police, Graphael Musamba separately said investigations were proceeding well and the police hoped that the donors who gave the money to the NGOs would be ready to assist in its investigations.
