POLICE in Kasama have arrested 42 juveniles and eight bar owners for flouting the law on under-age children patronising bars.
Kasama Town Clerk, Francis Nkhoma, who confirmed the arrest in an interview yesterday, said 50 people were arrested during a joint operation by the State and council police.
Mr Nkhoma said during the operation, eight bars were closed down for admitting under-age children contrary to the provisions of the Liquor Licensing Act Cap 167 of the Laws of Zambia.
He said seven were picked up from Nella's Bar, 15 from Niosis Nite Club, one from Nkole Tarven, five from Directors Tarven and 13 from Top Club and closed down the named drinking places.
Mr Nkhoma said police also picked up two barmen and seven adults at Kabali Bar for disorderly conduct and closed down the premises for failing to observe closing time.
"We are aware that some adults entice the minors through alcohol to sexually abuse them in brothels," he said.
He said the council was determined to keep the children away from the drinking places.
Mr Nkhoma said the council was currently engaged in consultations with the child development department to dispose of the cases.
He said the minors may require rehabilitation and counselling from the child development department which would access cases with the view of rehabilitation.
