Kampala — BURUNDI'S Tresor Ntwari and Jeremie Minani started as underdogs and shocked all including experienced Kenyan pair of Silas Makiso and Joseph Waigajo in the final of the Club International Beach Volleyball Championship over the weekend.

The Burundi team that made their debut at the fourth edition of the regional event shifted their game from the hard spikes Kenyans are used to, and beat their opponents powerful block with intelligent short balls.

No Ugandan team reached the finals as eventual women winners Kenya's Dorcus Ndasaba and Margaret Indakala showed Diana Businge and Mariam Nakamanya the exit in the second semifinal.

Uganda's Mombasa silver medalists Sharon Pajije and Vivienne Aketch also fell to Kenyans Eunice Maiyo and Yelena Juma, to complete an all Kenyan final.

"This is a lesson for us. We are the best in the region but we need to prove that in the subsequent events. Pairing players should not be voluntary but according to their abilities," local sport boss Sadiq Nasiwu urged.

The top four teams shared a total cash prize sh1.4m and trophies courtesy of sponsors Club Pilsner.

The event attracted 32 teams from Burundi, Kenya Rwanda and hosts Uganda.
