Abuja — As crime rates grow higher among children, parents have been charged to train their children in the old African traditional way.
The charge came weekend at the 2009 edition of children workers conference of the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Nigeria (CEF) which held at Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Speaking on the theme of the conference tagged, "Walking with God", guest speaker Rev. Basil Orkpe of NKST church regretted that African parents have so sown the western life into their children; a situation that has swayed many from the ideal way of bringing up their children.
According to him, "It is amazing that African people think that whatever the western people do is the right thing. Even in the bringing up of our children today, we have given up and put aside our own traditional way of raising children and we have imbibed the western way of life in them and what ever you are seeing today is the outcome of it. Let us go back to the basis, if we want our country to move forward and exactly what we want it to be, we have to find our roots".
He pointed out that children as mirror of the society often reflects either the bad or good things they learn from their parents and even added that parents should show good example for their children to emulate.
Quoting from Genesis chapter 5:24, he said that walking with God is not static but a process with a deliberate motion, an activity in promoting religion among others adding that walking with the Creator is a great requirement if a Christian desires to be great in this life time.
In his remark the chairman of CEF FCT chapter, Dr. Fred Ache disclosed that research carried out by the body showed that between the ages of 4-14, 85 per cent of children become Christians.
He said that CEF which started about 60 years ago with over 157 countries as members has the major aim of training and winning children over to God.
According to him, "CEF is a non denominational body. The sole aim of the body is to teach children the ways of God. We train children teachers from different churches and they in turn teach our children".
