Kampala — FISH farmers in Kyanamira sub-county Kabale district are to receive fish fry from the sub-county hatcheries. The hatcheries were recently restocked with parent fish that can produce over 30,000 fish fry every three months.

This was revealed by the sub-county chief, Eric Sunday, on Sunday after overseeing a fish harvest at Petrinia Basigirenda's fish farm in Nyakagera parish.

The sub-county fisheries extension officer, Tadiuso Zabwe, said the hatcheries had the capacity to satisfy all the fish farmers in the sub-county.

He added that the market for fish was growing bigger everyday. Basigirenda's pond is 50ft by 100ft with a capacity of 20,000 fish. She rears tilapia, carp and mud fish.

Some of the fish caught in the pond weighed between two and five kilograms. The sub-county National Agriculture Advisory Services (NAADS) farmers' forum chairperson, Keith Rwamahe, urged farmers, who own land near wetlands, to start fish farming.

"Other enterprises that are being supported by NAADS in the sub-county include fruit growing, poultry farming, cattle keeping and mushroom growing," said Rwamahe.
