Tragedy struck yesterday at Awada Onitsha, Anambra State when the mother of a bride and that of the bridegroom were found dead in their sleep, hours after the wedding of their children.
Also, the newly-wedded couple, Mr. Patrick Ngwu, his wife, Ukamaka and the best man, whose name could not be immediately known, were taken to a near-by hospital, after relapsing in coma.
Daily Champion gathered that the couple after wedding on Saturday went for a thanksgiving service last Sunday, and then had a nice time with their family members as well as friends before retiring to bed.
Sources said the turn of events became tragic when neighbours woke up Monday morning and found the two women dead.
Ngwu hails from Eziagu local government area of Enugu State while his wife Ukamaka hails from Awada, a suburb of Onitsha.
This ugly incident attracted the residents of Awada, who alerted Awada Police Station, which directed the residents to take them to the hospital.
When Daily Champion visited No 17B Oraifite Street, Awada, the victims' flat in the third floor was deserted as they had been moved to Divine Mercy Hospital, Awada, where the couple and the best man are receiving treatment.
At the hospital, relations, friends and well-wishers were seen discussing the matter in hushed tones, even as they refused to speak to newsmen. Efforts to see the medical director of the hospital failed as he was busy battling to save the victims.
Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer, Awada Police Division, Abdullahi Mudashiru said no formal report has been made to the station, but when they noticed the pandemonium in the vicinity, they went to the scene to know what was happening.
The cause of the death of the family members could not be ascertained as at press time, but there are speculations that the incident could be as a result of fumes from a generating set or food poisoning.
