Kamwenge District residents over the weekend arrested and handed over to the Police, a woman for allegedly starving her adopted five-year-old daughter to near death.

Information from the Police says Ms Beatrice Kamashomero adopted the girl from Kabujogera Police Post, promising to take care of her. The girl was reportedly abandoned at a roadside by her mother whose whereabouts is still unknown.

Beaten, burnt

The fate of the child was brought to light by residents, who reportedly watched the girl being beaten, starved and sometimes burnt with hot objects. The girl, who was seen by this reporter at Kamwenge Central Police Station, could hardly walk as her feet were eaten by jiggers, which have also invaded her buttocks. The officer in charge of the Family and Child Protection Unit, Ms Peace Tumuhirwe, said Ms Kamashomero will be charged with child neglect.
