Nigeria: Household Wastes Soon to Become Hot Cake - Aliero

Following the opportunities created in solid waste disposal and utilization in the Federal Capital Territory, households within the territory may soon commence withholding their waste for onward sales to the highest bidder. The FCT Minister, Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero made this assertion recently during an unscheduled inspection of some districts in the capital city, to assess the performance of cleaning contractors who were recently engaged by his administration.

Aliero said arrangements were being worked out under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) to generate electricity and fertilizer from waste in addition to the efforts being made by the Federal Government, households in Abuja will very soon enjoy the liberty of selling their waste. He noted that the partnership would require high volume of solid waste which would call for stiff competition among the two dump sites presently being worked on, and that the era of uncollected refuse would soon be a thing of the past in the territory since solid waste would continuously be needed to generate electricity generation and fertilizer production.

He foresaw a situation where, in the no distant future, solid waste in households would become wealth since the residents may hold onto them until a better bargain is achieved which, no doubt, will be a very good development in the maintenance of our environment. He assure that the FCT administration would, however, not stop performing its statutory function of refuse collection and disposal in order to keep the city clean to international standard.

Senator Aliero recalled that the Federal Executive Council last week approved the sum of about N2.5 billion for 20 lots of cleaning contractors in the Federal Capital City for their annual job performance, expressing hope that the approval and arrival of 10 compacting Trucks from Ukraine would radically change the pattern of waste management in the FCT, going by the expertise expected from the firms in service delivery.
