Lagos — History was made yesterday, as the Lagos State Government accepted a proposal by Guaranty Trust Bank to sponsor the 2009 Principals' Cup. This landmark partnership was made known at a meeting between representatives of GTBank and Lagos State Government officials led by the Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Sosan
GTBank's Head of Communication and External Affairs, Lola Odedina, who represented the Bank's Managing Director, Tayo Aderinokun at the event, said the Bank took the decision to sponsor the Principals' Cup for three years as a result of its belief in the Lagos State government's youth and sports development policies.
She also said the bank hopes, through its sponsorship, to redeem the image of the Principals' Cup and steer it back to its place of pride amongst sporting events in Nigeria.
In her response, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Princess Sarah Sosan, representing, Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola commended the bank's consistent efforts over the years towards the development of the educational sector and also towards social development.
She further stated that the Bank's decision to take on the sponsorship for 3 years is indeed very commendable and promised the full support and cooperation of the Lagos State Government towards the actualisation of the project.
The Lagos State Principals' Cup is the largest secondary school football competition in Nigeria. It used to be the hunting ground for talents for the national teams. Lagos State has the highest number of secondary schools in Nigeria and this presents a fertile ground for youth development and also, the development of sporting talents that will reshape the sporting landscape in Nigeria in the nearest future.
