Nigeria: Okocha Blasts - Leave Tunisia Alone!

Lagos — Former Super Eagles captain and a member of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Nigeria 's preparation's for the World Cup, Austin 'Jay Jay' Okocha, has advised members of the national team and their technical crew to concentrate on the the game against Kenya instead of wishful thinking of how Mozambique would help them stop Tunisia on Saturday.

Nigeria is on the verge of missing out on the World Cup finals for the second time consecutively if the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia beat the Black Mambas of Mozambique this weekend in Maputo regardless of the outcome of Nigeria's match in Kenya the same time. But the mercurial former midfielder insisted though the Eagles still have a chance to make it to the finals the side must do the nation a favour by facing their own match first and wait for what ever happens in the other game should not be of concern to us.

"We have to face the reality that the Tunisians are not sleeping and waiting for Nigeria to have a jolly ride to the finals in South Africa and in as much as we expect them to slip on banana peel, we must first of all put all our hopes on Nigeria's massive win away in Kenya and wait for the outcome of the other group game.

Okocha drew similarity between the present situation with his days in the team when the Eagles went through a thorny path to reach the World Cup finals in Korea/Japan 2002 ahead of the Lone Star of Liberia.

"It was really agonising that period when we had to win in Khartoum against Sudan who were very much in contention for the sole group ticket while we waited for Ghana to win away in Liberia for us and at the end of the day everything worked our way and we sailed to the finals in the far east.

"The beauty of the whole thing is that we had a two-week training under the scorching sun of Kano and acclimatised for the Khartoum tie which we won convincingly 4-0, but in the build up, we were less concerned about the other match in Monrovia and at the end of the day we were happy that Ghana did us the favour with the 2-0 win in over George Weah's inspired Liberia.

"But today every ball fan including the officials at the Glass House are just looking at the Maputo match as our cornerstone as if the Kenya tie is a foregone deal. Prayer to God is not just the answer because the good Lord only answers prayers against an enemy and not against opponent, hence all these over-night prayer warriors are not doing us any good all in the name of 'tactical'. Its all rubbish," he submitted.

Should Nigeria pick a valuable win in Nairobi and Mozambique fail to do its part the pace setting Tunisians will top the group and qualify for the World Cup thus making it the second time in succession that the Eagles would be making a last ditch but futile surge to earn a berth at the World Cup.

During the run to Germany 2006, Nigeria while was pummeling Zimbabwe in the last group match at Abuja, Rwanda which it banked on to hold Angola in Kigali was not up to the task as the Angolans won and edged out Nigeria from participation at the World Cup for the first time since 1994 in USA.
