Gambia: Tanji Eco-Tourism Project Team Visits Site

The project coordinating committee members and stakeholders of the Tanji eco-tourism project, last Thursday, visited the Tanji Bird Reserve/Eco-Tourism project site.

The project is sponsored by the National Environment Agency's Global Environment Facility (GEF) Adaptation to Coastal and Climate Change (ACCC) project. The goal of the project is to develop and pilot a range of effective coping mechanisms for reducing the impact and vulnerability of climate change in vulnerable coastal communities.

It also aims to establish a modern ecotoursim camp in Tanji Bird Reserve for the people in the communities of Tanji, Ghana Town and Madyana to become aware of their immediate environment and the benefit they can harness whilst protecting the biodiversity. Taking the delegates on a tour of the project site, Alpha Omar Jallow, the construction manager of the project, said the land will be rehabilitated to be a productive land.

He said the project will be very beneficial to the camp as it will among other things have four lodges, a restaurant and a conference room. He said the lodges are exposed to the sea and that no timber will be used in its construction. According to Jallow, the first phase of the project is valued at D2.5 million and assured that the first phase will be ready on time.For his part, Doudou Trawally, the national project co-ordinator of Adaptation to Coastal and Climate Change, said the project will be very useful to the communities as it can be a place for income earning and also as job opportunity. According to him, after the project, all the lodges will have electricity and water supply.

He finally thanked all those who are partnering with them in the project implementationKobina Eckwuam, the Alkalo of Ghana Town, described the project as very important noting that it will help in sustaining the forests.
