Abuja — The House of Representatives is considering a bill that will prohibit candidates from cross-carpeting from the party that elects them into office to another party, the chairman of the Committee on Electoral Matters, has said.
Rep Musa Sarkin Adar told newsmen in Abuja yesterday that cross-carpeting 'is a cowardice by some politicians that fear defeat', pointing out that it poses threat to the country's political development.
He said: "We are considering a bill that will prohibit candidates from cross-carpeting because it is a sign of cowardice, irresponsibility and non-principle. It is part of the memorandum we have received during our public hearing and we will look at it and consider it appropriately.
"I want you to understand that before anybody becomes a governor or member of House of Representatives, he must have stayed in the party for two months and within those months he would have ample time to study the principles, the manifestoes and objectives of the party.
And if there's any defect, one should have known before joining the party.
