Tunisia: Parliamentary Day of RCD MPs

9 November 2009

Tunis — Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD) and prime minister Mohamed Ghannouchi underlined that Tunisia is entitled to take pride in the Tunisians' large cohesion around President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali and their attachment to his person to carry on leading the country on the path of invulnerability and prosperity, as reflected in the results of the October 25, 2009 elections.

Chairing on Monday afternoon, as instructed by President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, the Parliamentary Day of the RCD members of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Mohamed Ghannouchi underlined that Tunisia has managed thanks to the pertinent choices of the Head of State and his forward-looking vision to avoid upheavals, strengthen the attributes of security, stability and social peace and boost its economy which showed great resistance capacity to changes.

He reminded that the 2009 elections, as stressed by Tunisian and foreign observers, recorded a very high turn out and a strong participation of youth, thanks to the lowering of the voting age from 20 to 18 years.

He said that these elections were held in total transparency, they were fair and compliant with the law, which reflects, once more, the maturity of the Tunisian people and their awareness of their rights and duties.

Mr. Mohamed Ghannouchi commended the brilliant success of the Rally's lists in the legislative elections, demonstrating one more time, the expansion of the Party's popular rank-and file and its vanguard position.

He called to embark on the new stage with confidence and determination to iron out difficulties and take up challenges to forge ahead on the path of achieving the ambitious targets set by President Ben Ali.

The Rally's Deputy Chairman also said he was convinced that the new legislative term will mark a new stage, given the importance of bills, plans and programmes to be submitted to the legislative branch and that fall in line with the achievement of the objectives and guidelines of the presidential platform and the contribution of the legislative power to deepening several issues as part of its debates with government on sector-based policies.

He also extended, with attendance of the RCD politburo members, his congratulations to the RCD MPs on their success in the elections.

He expressed the pride RCD activists take in the victory of their party's lists in all constituencies, which shows, he said, the central position held by the Rally in the country's development process and its leading role in the national political life.

The RCD Secretary-General underlined that this Parliamentary Day is held at the opening of the new legislative term, as Tunisia is celebrating with enthusiasm and pride the 22nd Anniversary of the Change, pointing out that this event is close to the heart to all Tunisians, first and foremost the RCD activists'.

He added that this glorious event enhances the Tunisian people's confidence in a prosperous present and a better future, as part of vanguard guidelines and choices set in the new electoral platform of the next five-year term.
