Tunis — Following the latest presidential and legislative elections held on October 25, 2009, the Chamber of Deputies begins today its 12 th parliamentary mandate with a 62 % rate of new members.
The new pluralist parliamentary composition for the next five year period 2009-2014, includes 214 seats, against 189 in 2004. Tunisia's majority party, the Democratic Constitutional Rally (RCD) which won 161 seats, also witnesses a renewal rate of 57%.
In another groundbreaking event, and for the first time in Tunisian history, the opposition has captured a quarter of parliamentary seats with a record 53 seats, divided between six parties, including the Green Party for Progress (PVP) which enters for the first time in parliament.
Tunisia's 12 th Legislature is also marked by the creation of parliamentary groups following the internal amendment of the Chamber of Deputies voted in 2009. These new groups will contribute to foster further dynamism, dialogue and pluralism.
Another novelty resides in the revision of their composition, as well as in the boosting of their prerogatives to allow for a greater celerity and efficiency of parliamentary action.
Tunisia's new Legislature begins its activities with the implementation of the projects included in the new Presidential Program for the next five years, as well as the follow up of the implementation of the country's 11 th development plan.
It also reflects the important strides made by Tunisia in anchoring the democratic process under the Leadership of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali whose priority is to further enrich Tunisia's political life.
