The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EP), the Rt. Rev. Francis Amenu, says Christianity has helped many communities to keep the peace between them over the years, and observed that in times of war, Christianity continues to bring peace to the people.
He continued that Christianity played the crucial role of bringing hope to the less privileged in society in times of difficulties, and enhances peaceful co-existence between peoples of different backgrounds, thereby promoting unity in the country.
The EP Church Moderator, who said this in a sermon to mark the centenary celebration of the church at Taviefe in the Ho Municipality, urged Christians to lead lives worthy of emulation, through good stewardship in their activities.
The celebration was under the theme: "The Lord Has Done Great Things for Us and We are Very Glad."
Rt. Rev. Amenu pointed out the need for people to see development as the collective responsibility of all in promoting social and economic development, and challenged Ghanaians to use their talents to help in the development efforts of the country.
The immediate Past Moderator of the EP Church, the Very Rev. Dr. L. K. Buama, who launched a 98-page book on evangelisation and education at Taviefe over the past one hundred years, commended the chiefs and people of the area for the documentation of historical events in the area, noting that the history of the people would help them live meaningful lives.
The Paramount Chief of the Ziavi traditional area, Togbega Koku Ayim III, who was the Guest Speaker, said religion had played a significant role in the development efforts of the country, and commended the chiefs and people of Taviefe for the sustenance of the Christian religion over the past one hundred years.
Togbega Koku Ayim said with the peaceful environment created through the activities of the Christian religion, the chiefs and people should take advantage of the opportunity to co-ordinate development activities that would be of mutual interest to them, as they forget about the past and forge ahead in unity.
The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Col. Cyril Neku (rtd), commended the religious bodies, particularly the EP Church, for contributions to national development efforts over the years, in the areas of education, health and agriculture.
He urged Ghanaians to defend and protect the laws of the country at all times, to ensure a peaceful society for accelerated development.
