Uganda: Soldiers Told to Grow Coffee, Trees

Luke Kagiri

9 November 2009

Kampala — Soldiers have been urged to grow coffee and trees for commercial purposes. The commander of the land forces, Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, was on Saturday launching the tree and coffee planting project for soldiers in the Chieftaincy of Mubende Rehabilitation Centre.

He said the army uses a lot of timber and therefore it was beneficial for soldiers to fully engage in tree planting.

The project has been supported by the UPDF MPs, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority and Hima Cement, who donated over 50,000 pine tree seedlings and 115,000 coffee seedlings.

Richard Kagimu of the coffee authority said a demonstration farm had been set up in Mubende to help the soldiers learn how to grow coffee.
