Nairobi — Twahir Muhiddin will be in charge of Harambee Stars until further notice, Football Kenya Limited chairman Mohammed Hatimy said on Tuesday.
Hatimy said Muhiddin, who has been the assistant of Antoine Hey over the past nine months, will handle Kenya for their final World Cup/African Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria on Saturday at Moi International Sports Centre.
In a fresh twist of events, FKL vice chairman Erastus Okul said a coaches committee comprising Jacob Mulee, James Sianga, Mohammed Kheri, Vince Ombiji and Patrick Naggi has been formed to assist Muhiddin for the match against Nigeria.
Okul said Hey was no longer the Harambee Stars coach.
This development follows Hey's failure to conduct training for Harambee Stars since Sunday when the team reported for camp at MISC.
"Hey is supposed to be training the team and he has not done so. That is a breach of contract. He must explain to us why he is not training the team. Since he has left, his deputy has taken over," Hatimy said.
In the two days that Harambee Stars have been training this week the German coach has been conspicuously absent.
Star striker
Hey apparently made good his threat not to conduct any training session if he is not in charge of who he selects to the national team. FKL last week ordered the 39-year-old German coach to recall star striker Dennis Oliech, midfielders Emmanuel Ake and Jamal Mohammed and defender Edgar Ochieng.
Hey however called only Oliech and Ake saying he did not have plans for the other two players and would not train the team if the two reported to camp.
FKL, through acting secretary Mohammed Thabit, quickly responded by saying Mohammed and Ochieng had to be on the team whether Hey liked it or not.
The showdown came this week when the concerned players did indeed reportand went for training as the camp registered a full house.
