Nairobi — Two Coast MPs have criticised the push to send post-election violence suspects to The Hague.
They also described the visit to Kenya by the International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo as a waste of time.
East African Cooperation minister Amason Jeffa Kingi and Kisauni MP Ali Hassan Joho said focusing on the 2007 General Election violence was like "scratching the surface of the problem".
They said the eruption of the chaos was a culmination of long-time pent-up anger, injustices and frustration of Kenyans which had finally found an outlet.
"Inviting Mr Ocampo, trying ministers and other people accused of killings and the violence in 2007/8 will not solve our problems. We need a long- term solution that puts in place a mechanism that ensures equal rights and opportunities for all," said Mr Kingi.
The two MPs were addressing the public during a funds drive to pay salaries for the board of governors teachers at Adu Secondary School in Magarini District.
A total of Sh367,174 was raised, with Mr Kingi donating Sh130,000 and Mr Joho Sh100,000.
The MPs later visited residents displaced by floods in Marereni and gave 650 bales of maize flour from the Coast Parliamentary Group (CPG) and businessmen.
The lawmakers said CPG would preach the gospel of majimbo before a referendum on the new constitution, which Coast it does not support federalism, they said.
"If the Coast does not get what it deserves in terms of resources, it may as well become an independent state," said Mr Joho, who reiterated that the region contributed immensely to the central government but received little.
