Ibadan — Governor Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State has advocated more enlightenment programme on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) saying this is desirable for the public to know the importance of the scheme.
He made the call on Thursday at the swearing-in ceremony of the 'C' Corps members deployed to Oyo State at the temporary orientation camp in Iseyin.
According to him, the recent cases and cruel murder of corps members in some states had necessitated the need for educational and public enlightenment of residents of such states.
He expressed concern that members of the public are yet to know what the corps members represent for the nation.
Governor Alao-Akala, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja noted that the NYSC had remained the most veritable organ of national unity and integration.
"We strongly believe that the Nigeria of our dreams will only be achieved through massive education of such religious bigots which is one of the cardinal programmes of the seven-point agenda of the government," he said.
The governor who promised greater welfare and security of crops members in the state said that the permanent orientation camp will be completed and commission at the second quarter of year 2010.
Earlier in his speech, the State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Gabriel Ibe stated that a total of 1,167 corps members made up of 530 males and 637 females had been registered in readiness for the orientation exercise.
He explained that the three-week exercise has been packaged to inform, educate and enlighten the corps members adding that the orientation camp will be run as a paramilitary outfit.
"Discipline shall be the watchword," the NYSC State Coordinator said.
