Umuahia — The bad condition of Enugu-Port Harcourt express way, especially the stretch between Okigwe in Imo State and Umuahia, Abia State capital, is getting worse by the day.
This portion of the road can best be described as a complete death trap.
Motorists and commuters who use the road go through a lot of stress and risk, as drivers drive in opposite direction in search of a way of maneuvering through the bad spots which dot both sides of the express road.
This had led to several accidents which has become an almost daily occurrence.
Worst affected are the big lorries conveying food stuffs and cattle from the Northern part of the country.
A number of these lorries fall on the bad spots, causing heavy traffic.
The owners of the goods, most of which are perishables, had lost huge investments on this road over time.
It is a common site to see people stranded on the expressway when their vehicles get stuck on account of the big potholes they fell into.
Besides, the bad spots have also become scenes where hoodlums attack motorists and commuters.
Contract for the repair of Enugu-Port Harcourt express road was awarded by the Federal Government in May this year at a cost of N8.9 billion.
The contract was awarded to Consolidated Construction Company (CCC), with a completion target of 24 months.
But CCC is still working on Enugu end of the road without effecting any palliative repair to make the Okikwe-Umuahia stretch passable.
