Asaba — MEMBERS of Delta State chapter of Association of Master Bakers and Caterers have called on the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to rise to the challenge of flushing out unscrupulous bakers who have infiltrated the market with low quality bread, thereby endangering the lives of consumers.
Chairman of the Association, Mr. Kelly Orien, who made the plea at Bakers' Forum in Asaba, yesterday, also lamented that the Association was yet to access the state govern-ment's micro-credit program-me.
"May I make a subtle plea to the NAFDAC authorities to intensify all efforts to rid the bakery industry of all sorts of miscreants,who have invaded the industry perpetrating terrible and mischievous acts." he said.
"If we must achieve a healthy living through the production of bread, it ,therefore, means that all hands must be on deck and an enabling environment must be created for the bakers to accomplish this vital aim in the interest of humanity".
State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr.Tony Nwaka, who represented the governor said: "I wish to implore the Association of Master Bakes and Caterers to seriously look into the possibility of replacing wheat flour with that of cassava as the main raw material in the baking industry.
"This will no doubt save scarce foreign exchange and assist bakers in having easy access to their raw material".
