South Africa: Deputy President to Visit Nigeria

10 November 2009

Pretoria — Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is to undertake a working visit to Nigeria to attend the 10th anniversary celebrations of the South Africa-Nigeria Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Abuja.

The Deputy President will depart for Nigeria on Friday and is expected to return on Sunday.

Accompanied by the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ebrahim Ebrahim, Motlanthe is expected to participate in the signing of Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding.

South Africa has committed itself to support close cooperation with the Federal Republic of Nigeria by structuring bilateral relations through the establishment of a BNC.

The 10th anniversary of South Africa-Nigeria BNC started in South Africa last month, with various activities and events. The theme of the celebration is: "South Africa and Nigeria in partnership for a better Africa."

Events taking place in both South Africa's and Nigeria's capital cities include a Business Round Table, academic and sporting activities, a trade fair, a fashion week, civil society seminars, joint parliamentary activities and a women and youth forum.
