Zambia: Govt, Church Have Good Partnership

11 November 2009

editorial

THE Government and the Church have always been good partners on many issues such as provision of social services and promoting good governance among the people.

This partnership has existed for a long time even in the colonial era and will continue to blossom now and in future in serving the citizens.

The Church has been running health and education institutions, some of which receive Government grants. The Government health workers have been attached to mission hospitals and are paid from State coffers.

There are a number of health programmes such as HIV/AIDS projects which are being spearheaded by various Church organisations.

There are also governance programmes under the ambit of the Church which have benefited the citizens even in remote parts of the country.

Such complementary programmes have trickled down to the poorest in many remote parts of the country and the Government itself is happy about the unwavering support.

It is against such a background that Chief Government spokesperson, Ronnie Shikapwasha has stated that the Government looks to the Church not only for spiritual guidance but also for guidance on matters that will improve the lives of the people.

The Government has maintained an open-door policy so that should there be a misunderstanding, a way forward could be sought through dialogue.

The Government has been playing its part by ensuring a conducive environment, among other issues, for the Church to conduct activities.

Independent Churches of Zambia chairperson, David Masupa has emphasised that the warm relationship with the Government will continue and that the Church has a duty to support the leadership.

Therefore, the spirit of oneness in serving the masses must continue and should the Church or Government encounter a misunderstanding, dialogue is the best recourse rather than embarking on condemnation through other avenues such as the media.
