Uganda: League Giants Below Par as Fufa Tests Free Entry for All

Kampala — SIX matches into the Uganda Super League, the traditional leaders have posted below par performances.

Uganda continental representatives URA and SC Villa have only three and two wins respectively.

CAF Champions League representatives, coach Moses Basena's URA and fifth on the table, are under pressure to impress but the players have remained rusty.

Basena acknowledges that his team which got a new face after the departure of several first team players, who helped him to the 2008/09 title, is still learning to play as a unit.

"I want to pick results but I'm also teaching football. With seven new players on the starting 11, it will take us sometime to play the game we had last season," Basena admitted yesterday.

His counterpart at Villa, Sula Kato, was of the same opinion that both teams are not impressive because they are under pressure.

"We need up to 10 matches before we can settle because teams are not the same yet we are looking at continental engagements," he said.

Villa, the most successful side with 16 league trophies, lies eighth on the table.

Fourth placed KCC's latest 1-0 loss to URA has sparked off a tirade of criticism for coach Sam Ssimbwa.

Ssimbwa promised to instil discipline among the players when he arrived at Lugogo in the pre-season. But some have continued to abscond from training.

The soccer body will this Saturday start testing the impact of free entry to league matches when Bunamwaya hosts Simba at Nakivubo. Fans will have free access to the stadium.

According to competitions secretary Moses Magogo, FUFA will evaluate the impact if sponsorship can be found to compensate the beneficiaries for gate collection.

"This being a test, there are no worthwhile compensations to be made to the beneficiaries. We will foot the bill for security and stadium hire," Magogo explained.

Magogo said that MTN Uganda have decided to spread their wings from the Cranes sponsorship to help in promoting the match in a bid to attract crowds back to the stadiums.

New league regulations require clubs to categorize some of their home games for free entry as a way of winning the fans back.

League action resumes tomorrow with six matches on card. Express, bidding to regain top spot, hosts Hoima at Wankulukuku.
