Kaduna — Kaduna State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema has released the sum of N150 million for the commencement of the Kafanchan campus of the Kaduna State University (KASU) and has made provision for N500 million in the 2010 budget for infrastructural development at the campus
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Umar Sani, who disclosed this in a statement, said the allocation followed a presentation made by Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdulrahman Ezzeldine during his visit to the governor. He said the VC had presented a progress report on the university and the need for the take-off of the campus based on the original master-plan of the designers of the institution.
He added that the VC had decried the none release of funds to the university, especially the Kafanchan campus, which was a former government secondary school.
According to him the VC said with the exception of the faculty of Sciences phase one that currently have permanent and complete structures, other faculties were occupying temporary structures as most of the proposed permanent ones were either under construction or not yet available.
He said the VC had appealed for the construction of the second and third phases to enable the institution to meet the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Medical Council of Nigeria (MDCN) requirements for accreditation, adding that the Faculties of Medicine and Art were presently occupying temporary structures.
He also requested the governor to get in touch with the management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria to help relinquish a 200-room hostel facility located close to KASU for the use of its medical undergraduates.
In another development, the state government has spent N9.8 million for the payment of the 2009/2010 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) registration fees for students in the state's secondary schools.
The gesture, according to Sani was to ensure that the state's literacy level was improved through increased enrolment in schools.
He advised all parents not to withdraw their children from schools due to fees, but to ensure that all final-year students in secondary schools concentrate and write their final examination.
Sani added that the state government also engaged experience examiners to review past question papers of the last ten years, which would be complied into a book and distributed to students at subsidised prices in all government secondary schools.
The exercise which will cost N2.650 million, he said would cover subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English Language
