The major reason behind the delay and circulation of Genetically Modified foods item into the Nigerian market is due to the lack of Biosafety Law in the country, the Director General of the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) has said.

Professor Bamidele Solomon said this yesterday in Abuja at the diner organised in honour of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation board members.

He said as soon as the Bill is passed into Law the country will start reaping the benefits of the Biotechnology products especially the GMs. He said it is hoped that the National Assembly will conclude the public hearing on the Bill before the year runs.

He said contrary to many believes that biotechnology or GM products are bad to humanity, "Biotechnology is just an application of scientific techniques to improve plants, animal and micro-organism."

He said a lot of people misunderstood the concept of GM products. He said the GM foods are new way of transferring useful traits such as resistance to disease from plant to animal or micro-organisms by inserting genes from another organism.

He said GMs would ensure food security in the country.
