Nigeria: FG Assures on Swine Flu

The Federal Government yesterday assured Nigerians that steps have been taken to safeguard citizens since Swine Flu struck a 9 year old American girl in Lagos last week.

Concerns are being raised against influx of persons into the country, since the discovery of the Influenza A(H1N1) virus.

Special Assistant, Communications to the Minister for Health, Niyi Ojuolape, who called on Nigerians not to panic said though no restrictions has been implemented, all government agencies are working round the clock to ensure the safety of its citizens against the flu.

He said, "Even though the country has recorded one confirmed case, we hasten to state categorically that in line with WHO International Health regulations (IHR 2005) there is no travel restriction into or out of Nigeria, as a result of the occurrence of the influenza in Nigeria.

"Any person can come into the Country once he or she has a valid entry document especially since there are appropriate surveillance and safeguard measures being taken at out ports of entry".

He confirmed that the girl has recovered fully and is back to school and that "all the contacts at home or at school are also well and free from the influenza pandemic".

He stressed that the Federal Government and all the States' Ministries of Health in collaboration with other Partners have put in place efficient and strengthened preparedness and response plans in addition to enhanced surveillance to pick up and contain any other case that may occur.

His words: "We want to again reassure all Nigerians that they do not need to panic and that the Ministry together with our Partners are on top of the situation making sure that all Nigerians are protected from the pandemic".
