Engineering icon and President, Association of Consulting Engineers Nigeria (ACEN), Mr. Bayo Adeola has called for a holistic approach to solving the nation's development problems, saying power alone cannot solve all the problems.

Speaking in Lagos during the group's 31st annual conference and presentation of his latest book; 'Engineering is Development', Adeola traced the nation's woes to sectoral palliatives instead of a holistic approach which he described as the best way of pursuing consolidation in national development.

"In an emerging economy, development challenges must be faced simultaneously." "There is no way, the country can internalise the expected gains of a steady power supply in an environment that lacks good roads, water supply, good education system, credible leadership and general infrastructural development," he said.

On the new book, its lead presenter, Mr. Vincent Maduka described Adeola's book as timely, saying it came at a time the nation was in dire need of focus in general engineering development.

He expressed hope that the government would achieve the 6,000 megawatts in power supply by December 31, but faulted Adeola's view that Nigeria was in dire need of overhaul of infrastructural platforms.

The chief launcher of the new book and Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel described the writer of the book as a gift to the nation's engineering development, saying apart from taking time to write the book, "Adeola was the brain behind the review and production of the latest masterplan of the state.

Daniel represented by the state's Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Segun Awonusi called on Nigerian engineers to the nation's health, transportation, education, energy, manufacturing challenges.

The conference ends tomorrow with a dinner and awards night at the Ikeja Sheraton Hotels and Towers.
