Botswana: Junior Wins Barclays Golf Tournament

Itumeleng Medupi emerged the surprise winner of the Barclays Bank golf tournament in Selebi-Phikwe over the weekend.

The junior Selebi-Phikwe club golfer beat a field of 66 in scorching heat on Saturday to lift the crown.

The tournament was held at Selebi-Phikwe Golf Club. Medupi told Mmegi Sport that she did not expect to win the tournament because it had some of the best golfers in the country like Shane Granger, Oganeditse Marata and Trazinah Marudu. The champion said she only started playing golf two years ago. "I took part in the 2009 AON tournament, the Makgadikgadi Open and I managed to win the junior category.

"I played the Barclays tournament last year but I performed badly," she said. She added that people must know that golf is like any other sport and it is not expensive to play as many think. She gets the courage from her father and coach, Gabriel Tjitjo.

The Barclays Bank tournament has been taking place in Selebi-Phikwe for the past 24 years.

Managing director for Barclays, Thuli Johnson said their intention is to support the growth of the private sector in the town and assist Selebi-Phikwe to become a major centre.
