Uganda: Lwakataka Nicks Kiyaga Fundraising Sprint At Festino

Shafique Ssemujju must have felt like the winner, for at least a while, as fans mobbed the teenager and lifted him shoulder high when he emerged from the cockpit following a mercurial drive during the 'Jump Start Black Widow' fundraising sprint on Sunday.

And the fans were right. Ssemujju, co-driven by Leon Ssenyange, had convincingly beaten two-time national champion Ponsiano Lwakataka during the final run at the Festino double race circuit in Mukono.

Clocking four minutes and nine seconds, Ssemujju (Subaru N10) finished eight seconds before Lwakataka (Subaru N8) could get to the checkered flag but the latter, with a 14-second cushion from the first run, had the last laugh.

In total, Lwakataka clocked eight minutes and 27 seconds to take the podium by two seconds. Season revelation Godfrey Lubega (Subaru N4) was third.

All proceeds from the sprint, organized by Motorsport Africa Club (Mosac, will go towards Geoffrey Kiyaga's dream of purchasing a Ford Fiesta valued at Sh60m for the 2010 season.

The absence of Muhammad Abdulsamad enabled Ssemujju to open up a 16-point lead in this year's Clubman Rally Championship (CRC) standings. Ssemujju has 108.5 points while Nasser Mutebi leapfrogged Abdulsamad (90) to assume second with 92.5 points.

Sprint results

P. Lwakataka 8.27

S. Ssemujju 8.30

G. Lubega 8.43
