Nigeria: Electricity Consumers Attack PHCN Manager

Ughelli — THE Business Manager, Undertaking, Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Ughelli, Delta State, Mr. Francis Iyayi, yesterday narrowly escaped being lynched by protesting residents of Emuobor Street in the metropolis.

Residents of Emuobor street came out in their numbers in the early hours of yesterday protesting the power outage in the area in last two months.

Vanguard gathered that the protesters, who were mainly women, pounced on the Mr. Francis Iyayi, who only managed to escape after having his shirts torn.

According to the protesters, the street was thrown into darkness over two months ago when the transformer serving the area went bad.

They added that PHCN failed to repair or replace the faulty transformer over the period.

When contacted on telephone, Mr. Iyayi attributed the protest to misunderstanding, adding that the area was thrown into darkness about six weeks ago when the transformer serving the area went bad, but that effort was on to replace it.

Also contacted on telephone, Bishop Diamond Emuobor, advised the protesters to seek credence and clearance before embarking on such a protest.

He, however told the management of PHCN to learn to keep to its promises.
