Banjul — Thousands of Mourids in the greater Banjul Area last Sunday descended on the president's farms in Sifoe and Farato villages, to harvest the produce.

At the Farato farm, the volunteers harvested the groundnut and the rice field, before proceeding to the Sifoe farm to harvest the groundnut produce. According to Alhaji Mbye, the officer-commanding, Customs Department in Western Region, the response by the Mourids in The Gambia to harvest President Jammeh's farm in Sifoe and Farato came following a call (Ndigal) from the Mourid Khalipha General, Serign Momodou Lamin Bara Mbacke in Senegal.

He said the call was both noble and holy. "It is noble because the Mourids owe it to the president to give him support in his drive to banish hunger out of The Gambia and beyond. It is also holy because they are answering to the call from the Khalifa General of the Mourid community," he said.

The leader of the Mourid community in The Gambia, Serign Pap Demba Jobe, said the call (Ndigal) came at a short notice from the sister Republic of Senegal to converge at President Jammeh's farms in Farato and Sifoe to harvest both the rice and groundnut produce. He said that the Mourids would proceed to Kanilai next Sunday to assist the president in harvesting the farm produce cultivated there.

Jobe said it is a worthy cause to assist President Jammeh because of his good initiatives. According to him, whatever President Jammeh is doing is not for himself but for mankind, assuring that they will give President Jammeh all the support to drive hunger out of The Gambia and beyond.

He thanked all the Mourids for answering to the call last Sunday but called on them once again to converge at the Kanifing Municiapl Council and Banjul City Council offices early next Sunday, so that they can depart for Kanilai on November 15, 2009.

The deputy minister of Agriculture, Momodou S Kah, on behalf of President Jammeh, thanked the Mourid community for their speedy work in both farms. He noted that all the work they accomplished in the farms was as a result of the call they received from Serign Momodou Lamin Bara Mbacke. Deputy Minister Kah then thanked the Mourid community in The Gambia for being so obedient as manifested in answering to the call to harvest President Jammeh's farm.
